READ MORE - Tayla Vlaeminck to make Test debut for Australia
THE timing couldn't be any better for the Bendigo District Cricket Association expanding its foray into the women's game.
At a time when the BDCA is introducing its first open women's competition, homegrown Bendigo product Tayla Vlaeminck is creating headlines for her international career with Australia, which included making her Test debut in the Ashes against England in July.
Vlaeminck was also just part of Australia's 3-0 Twenty20 series win over Sri Lanka.
While the BDCA has previously ran underage cricket for females, this season the association will have two competitions - open and under-16.
As a lead-up to the competitions starting, a Bendigo Regional Female Cricket Come and Try Day will be held at Strathdale's Rodda Oval at Beischer Park this Sunday.
The Come and Try Day from 11.30am will feature giveaways, mini matches, skill zones, registration and competition information.
The open women's competition will be played on Sunday mornings starting on October 27, while the under-16 grade will be played on Wednesday nights from November 6.
Both formats will be 20 overs per side and similar to indoor cricket where players will bat in pairs and face four overs each, while teams will be deducted runs for wickets lost.
At this stage there are four clubs with teams confirmed for the open competition - Bendigo (two teams), Golden Square, Strathdale-Maristians and Strathfieldsaye.
Among the supporters of the growing women's cricket in Bendigo is Federal Member Lisa Chesters.
"I'm proud that Bendigo is one of the first regions to get behind women's club cricket. Every girl deserves the chance to decide what sport she wants to play," Chesters said.
Meanwhile, showcasing the women's talent within Bendigo, the BDCA has taken out the Northern Rivers Junior County Week title.
Bendigo (3-97) defeated Goulburn Murray (4-94) in the final earlier this week, with Strathdale-Maristians' Mackenzee Porter earning the player of the match. Mark Ryan coached the side.
