Vic Country for many seasons has been a predominantly nomadic club with no permanently-established home base.
This season the Heathcote Cricket Club has generously allowed Vic Country to share the wonderful facilities at Barrack Reserve.
The club has been playing in the over-60s division of the Victorian Veterans Sunday Cricket Competition for the past 12 seasons.
The Sunday matches are not played for premiership points but are all still extremely competitive with the main emphasis on participation.
There are 16 home and away games played during the season and games are shared among all players on the playing list over the season.
The club is playing five home games at Heathcote during the season, October 13, November 17, November 24, December 15, and February 2.
Training is held every Friday morning at Harry Trott Reserve in Kennington, starting at 10am, but there is no compulsion on players to play or train each week, availability is left completely up to the individual.
Club spokesperson Bill Johnson said while the Vic Country team is made up of players from all over Victoria, a large percentage originate from the Bendigo region.
"At present there are two levels of veterans cricket, over-60s and over-50s and we are keen to eventually have enough players interested to play a few games in the over-50s division," he said.
"It is our long-term goal to eventually field a team in the over-50s competition.
"Every November there are three national carnivals, over-70s, over-60s and over-50s played. These carnivals are held in different states each year and players are selected from the over-60s and over-50s Sunday competitions to represent Victoria at these carnivals.
"As well as the national carnival, there are a further three carnivals each year that Vic Country sends an over-60s team to compete.
"In August we send a team to Maroochydore in Queensland to play in the Over-60s Winter Carnival. Following this we send a team to Mildura to play in the Willowfest Veterans Carnival in September and at the end of the regular season we send a team to Echuca in March to play in the Veterans Cricket Victoria Echuca Carnival.
"Apart from the fact that we are still playing the game that we are so passionate about, we believe the most important aspect to veterans cricket is the impact that getting out and playing and running around the cricket ground has on older men's mental health.
"We may not be as good as we once were, but the camaraderie with team-mates and the interaction with opposition teams of the same generation is still the same as it was 40-years ago.
Vic Country Veterans Cricket Club is always looking for new players and is keen to talk to any player over 50 years of age, who may be interested in having the occasional game or even a more regular game on a Sunday during the cricket season.
