Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal car crash in Woodend on Tuesday morning.
It is believed the driver lost control of his vehicle, which left the road and hit a tree on The Avenue of Honour, Woodend about 6.35am.
The driver and sole occupant, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
The Avenue of Honour is closed to traffic between Savages Lane and the Calder Freeway until further notice.

A ROAD in Woodend has been closed in both directions after a serious crash on Tuesday morning.
A VicRoads spokesperson said the Avenue of Honour (Macedon-Woodend Road) is closed in both directions between the Calder Freeway, Woodend North and Romsey Road.
Emergency services are directing traffic at the scene.
Drivers are being encouraged to use the Calder Freeway as an alternative. The closure may be in place until early afternoon.
VicRoads engineers will monitor conditions in real-time and will adjust signals as needed to keep traffic moving in the area.
