The shire was left one councillor short when John Shaw resigned from council last week.
The person to fill his vacancy in the shire's Lower Avoca Ward will be decided Tuesday, September 17, at 10am at the Buloke Shire's Wycheproof office.
Instead of residents voting in a by-election, the vacancy will be filled by a countback of the vacating councillor's votes from the 2016 Buloke Shire election.
"The vacating councillor's votes will be distributed to the remaining eligible unsuccessful candidates from the 2016 election, according to voters' preferences," Victorian Electoral Commission returning officer Phillippa Heskett said.
"The candidate who gains more than 50 per cent of the countback votes will be elected."
Scrutineers and interested parties may attend and observe the countback.
The result will be published online at www.vec.vic.gov.au and also in local newspapers.
