A very light yarding came forward mainly due to the wet wintery conditions.

Heavy steers were in short supply and sold to a top of $2.70 per kilo.

Medium to heavy steers sold to a top of $2.80 per kilo.

A quality run of vealers came through and the better calves sold to a top of $3.46 per kilo, holding firm to slightly dearer than last week.

A very small run of cows sold to a top of $1.90 per kilo, holding steady from last week.

Lambs: 9490. Change: down 3140.

Sheep: 2340. Change: down 945.

Supply continued to tighten as lamb numbers eased below 10,000 for the first time this winter, with sheep to just 2340 head.

There was a reasonable selection of supplementary finished lambs alongside plainer and mixed stock showing the effects of the season.

Competition for the best processor lambs remained robust, with prices firm to a few dollars dearer across the lead pens of heavy and trade lambs. Small and light weight Merino lambs were up to $10/head dearer amid limited supplies of MK processing stock under 17kg cwt.

There was a new Bendigo saleyard record set of $336/head for extra heavy export lambs up close to 38kg cwt.

The first pen of new season young lambs appeared and made $170/head for an estimated 18-19kg cwt, with agents saying current high prices had drawn them into the auction system early.

Not as many extra heavy lambs over 30kg cwt were yarded, with just three pens making from $326 to $336/head.

The main run of heavy crossbred lambs weighing 26-30kg cwt sold from $238 to $279/head.

The bulk of the trade weight lambs were in the 22-24kg cwt category, making from $190 to $242/head. The lead runs of processor lambs were returning estimated carcase prices from 900c to 960c/kg cwt.

Buyers did not give as much support to small and mixed pen lots of lambs, or stock in rough skins, and carcase results for these were often below 900c/kg.

The best trade weight Merino lambs off supplementary feed made from $209 to $229/head.

The majority of the Merinos were smaller types under 20kg cwt, making from $130 to $176/head to trend above 800c/kg cwt.

Sheep numbers and quality declined further.

There was just odd pens of extra heavy sheep in forward condition and they still received from $200 to $240/head despite a key northern exporter not operating this week.

The general run of medium and heavy sheep sold from $130 to $180/head, with good mutton still costing processors over 580c/kg cwt.
