Now Melbourne-based artist Minna Leunig has transformed it into a colourful mural that will catch the eyes of people in the Bendigo CBD.
Capital Venues and Events manager David Lloyd said the artwork brightened the intersection.
"That wall was a grey, dreary old wall that non-descript," he said. "Now people go past people and see great piece of art."
Leunig was selected from 35 applicants with Mr Lloyd saying her work's quirkyness and brightness stood out for judges who made the final decision.
"It's a specialist area," he said. "Not everyone can create works of that (large) scale. It's not like a normal painting, you've got to know what doing when painting on that scale.
"Five (of the 35 applicants) were locals. (Artists from outside Bendigo) see us as a destination. Minna was blown away by how welcome she felt with businesses offering facilities and people wanting to chat about the work."
Mr Lloyd said he hoped more building owners would consider getting involved in public art.
"Particularly in Bendigo, (heritage overlays mean) you can't just paint over any red brick wall. So finding spaces that are suitable is one of the things we consider," he said.
"It was great this building owner said yes to making this happen. We want more owners to say we have a wall, so we can partner with the community to make more things happen."
