Ms Chesters will now serve solely as Bendigo's parliamentarian after her roles as shadow assistant minister for both workplace relations and rural & regional australia were dumped in the new look cabinet.
Incoming opposition leader Anthony Albanese announced his new team on Sunday.
It includes former leader Bill Shorten in the National Disability Insurance Scheme and government services portfolios.
Former New South Wales premier Kristina Keneally has been named deputy leader of the opposition in the Senate as well as home affairs and immigration & citizenship shadow minister.
Ms Chesters was promoted to both her outer cabinet roles in 2016 under Mr Shorten.
"This promotion will just allow me to have a greater say in parliament and in the Labor party in policy development for all regional Australians and all Australian workers," she said at the time.
Ms Chesters declined to comment on the demotion.
Mr Albanese's office has been contacted for comment.
