JAKE Thrum just wanted to be part of a Bendigo inter-league win - earning the best-on-ground medal was an added bonus.
In what was a brilliant team effort where any of half-a-dozen players could have laid claim to being adjudged Bendigo's best player, it was Jake Thrum who was awarded the Derrick Filo Medal after the Blue and Gold's 99-point thrashing of Outer East on Saturday.
After starting the game on the inter-change, Thrum carried out his role of providing run and spread superbly all over the ground.
The zippy 23-year-old was busy from the moment he stepped foot onto the ground and was one of four Golden Square players - along with captain Jack Geary in the midfield, Adam Baird on a wing and defender Liam Barrett - who played starring roles in the 18.17 (125) to 3.8 (26) triumph.
"It's great to be part of a win after getting beaten last year (by Hampden)," Thrum said.
"We had a great group, everyone was committed at training, the players were in form and everything worked out well today.
"The QEO is a big ground, the weather was perfect, sun was out and we were able to run them off their legs.
"We knew if we could hold them on the inside and then get the ball on the outside we'd have the speed."
Thrum was among 12 players who kicked a goal for Bendigo, slotting one in the first quarter and could have ended the game with three had he taken all his chances.
"Thrumy was fantastic today... he had a lot of ball and his work-rate was unbelievable," Bendigo coach Darryl Wilson said.
"He's one of those players that I reckon as he goes up he gets better, but as a coach, you really like those players who get the ball at both ends of the ground.
"He has great versatility in that he can play forward, back or mid and it was great to see him play so well today."
