BENDIGO FNL - ROUND FIVE
EAGLEHAWK v SANDHURST
2.20pm Saturday at Canterbury Park
Two top three contenders go head-to-head in the match of the round.
Despite neither side producing close to their best footy yet, they both have a 3-1 record after four rounds.
Eaglehawk has defeated Sandhurst the past three times they've met and is a much tougher side to beat at Canterbury Park.
GOLDEN SQUARE v MARYBOROUGH
2.20pm Saturday at Wade Street
Here's a set of numbers to make every Maryborough player and fan shudder - 146, 238, 207, 200, 106, 140, 118 and 109.
Those figures are Golden Square's winning margins in the Dogs' past eight matches with the Magpies - an average margin of 158 points.
The Pies are a much improved side this year, so it shouldn't be a triple-figure margin this time around.
STRATHFIELDSAYE v KYNETON
2.20pm Saturday at Tannery Lane
Toughest gig in Bendigo footy right now is playing Strathfieldsaye at Tannery Lane.
The Storm are sitting pretty on top of the ladder and it's hard to see any weak links at the moment.
The Tigers have probably performed better in the first month of the season than what many people outside of the club expected. Anything less than a 10-goal defeat would be a good performance for Kyneton.
KANGAROO FLAT v CASTLEMAINE
2.20pm Saturday at Dower Park
By 5pm on Saturday afternoon one set of players and supporters will celebrate their first win of the season.
After strong off-season recruiting, both sides were expected to improve in 2019, but the first four rounds have been disappointing.
Kangaroo Flat's defensive structures look stronger and that might be the difference on Saturday.
SOUTH BENDIGO v GISBORNE
2.20pm Saturday at Harry Trott Oval
The Bloods host the first of three home games for the season at Harry Trott Oval.
The smaller ground will be of no fear to the Bulldogs, who thrive on a similar size ground at Gardiner Reserve.
The Bloods need to find a way to turn quarters and halves of good footy into a four-quarter performance.
HEATHCOTE DISTRICT FNL - ROUND FIVE
LBU v WHITE HILLS
2.15pm Saturday at Lockington.
How much improvement have the Demons made in five weeks?
The LBU Cats humiliated the Demons in their special HDFNL season-opener last month, winning by 15 goals.
The Cats have taken all before them since that game, while the Demons opened their 2019 account last week.
Cats should be too strong, but if it's a 15-goal margin again there'll be plenty of questions to be asked at Scott Street.
HEATHCOTE v LEITCHVILLE-GUNBOWER
2.15pm Saturday at Heathcote
An improved performance by Heathcote last week against Huntly.
You can't question the commitment of the re-building Saints - they just don't have the class to go with better teams for four quarters.
Back on their home deck they'll be competitive with the Bombers, but it's hard to see the Saints breaking through for an upset win against the reinging premier.
COLBINABBIN v HUNTLY
2.15pm Saturday at Colbinabbin
Last week's bye couldn't have come at a better time for the injury-ravaged Colbo.
With the benefit of the freshen up the Hoppers will be keen to make a statement against the young Hawks.
Huntly enjoyed its first win of the season last week - a gutsy comeback victory over Heathcote.
That should give coach Denis Grinton and the playing list some much-needed confidence.
ELMORE v MT PLEASANT
2.15pm Saturday at Elmore
Danger game for Mt Pleasant.
The Blues were on cloud nine after defeating North Bendigo last week, but that win will mean little if they drop this one to the Bloods.
Elmore's form looks incocistent, but the Bloods should regain some key players this week from injury and they'll be much harder to defeat.
LODDON VALLEY FNL - ROUND SIX
BL-SERPENTINE v PYRAMID HILL
2.15pm Saturday at Pyramid Hill
Hard to past Pyramid Hill on form.
The Bulldogs haven't put on a foot wrong, with four wins from as many matches.
In contrast, the Bears have been a touch disappointing so far. They're never easy to beat on their home deck, but the Dogs look to have too much depth and class.
BRIDGEWATER v MARONG
2.15pm Saturday at Bridgewater
The Mean Machine have promoted youth this year and with that you get ups and downs in form.
They've beaten MGYCW, Inglewood and BL-Serpentine, but suffered heavy defeats to Pyramid Hill and Calivil United.
Their best form is good enough to test a Marong side which is fast-becoming a genuine top three threat.
The Panthers are well-organised and hard to score against. They should win a close one.
MITIAMO v CALIVIL UNITED
2.15pm Saturday at Mitiamo
Big day for the Mitiamo as the club celebrates its 130th anniversary.
On the field the Superoos can't afford to take Calivil United lightly.
The Demons have put together some very impressive passages of footy in recent weeks, but 15-minute lapses have cost them dearly.
A four-quarter performance would give the Demons some chance to upstaging the classy Superoos.
MGYCW v NEWBRIDGE
5pm Saturday at Marist College
A rare evening game as the Eagles host reigning premier Newbridge under lights at Marist College.
Both teams were seen as top three certainties at the start of the season, but their form in the opening five weeks hasn't filled supporters with confidence.
Both teams have a 2-2 record, so even at this early stage of the season the loser on Saturday night is going to be behind the eight-ball in the race for a top-three berth.
