James Brown, 35, applied for bail in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Wednesday after he was charged with offences that included burglary, thefts of motor vehicles, and unlawful damage.
The court heard a man was doing maintenance work on his Bagshot property on April 21, when he got out of his Toyota LandCruiser and left it running at the front gate.
At that time, police alleged, a vehicle pulled up and Mr Brown got out of the passenger seat, entered the LandCruiser and drove off towards Bendigo.
It was alleged Mr Brown was wearing a black hooded jumper and a balaclava at the time.
The following morning at 4.57am Mr Brown and an unidentified male allegedly attended a rail manufacturing and maintenance business in Murphy Street, driving the stolen LandCruiser.
Police alleged Mr Brown rammed the gates to the building and a roller door, causing serious damage.
Mr Brown allegedly entered a building on the premises, kicking a door.
Prosecutor acting Senior Sergeant David Somerton said this was captured on CCTV footage, which showed a man wearing a black windcheater.
It was alleged he then drove to another building on the premises and used a gas cylinder to gain entry.
This too was captured by CCTV cameras, the prosecutor said, but this dropped out when the power was cut.
In total, $100 in cash and 10 vehicle keys were stolen.
Using one of these keys, Mr Brown was alleged to have stolen a red Ford with a GPS tracking device from the premises.
Later that morning, a civilian witness saw a male wearing a black top and a balaclava near a Ford sedan and a LandCruiser in bushland off Keenes Road in Long Gully.
Acting Senior Sergeant Somerton said the man and his two sons drove to the scene, where the man in the balaclava got into the LandCruiser and rammed the witnesses' vehicle at a speed described as about 20 kilometres an hour.
It was alleged the LandCruiser reversed, before ramming the vehicle again.
The court heard one of the sons got out, removed Mr Brown from the LandCruiser and restrained him until police arrived.
Police alleged the clothing he was wearing at the time was the same as seen in the CCTV footage from the burglary.
The court heard nine stolen keys, except for that of the Ford, were found in the LandCruiser.
The Ford was found in the backyard of a Derwent Drive property, a short distance away.
The court heard Mr Brown was on bail at the time of the alleged offending.
Acting Senior Sergeant Somerton said bail was opposed out of concern he would commit offences, fail to appear at court, and pose a risk to the public.
Defence lawyer Tass Antos said Mr Brown instructed there was footage that showed he was in Melbourne at the time of the first offence.
It was put to the court that a significant amount of time could pass before the matter was finalised, which meant Mr Brown could spend more time in custody than a sentence he would receive.
There was an issue determining an address at which Mr Brown could reside while on bail, and the matter was adjourned to Friday.
