Tania Maree Walker, 35, appeared in Bendigo Magistrates' Court via video link on Wednesday morning, charged with child homicide in relation to the 2008 death of Angela Bannister in Echuca.
Originally scheduled to make a bail application, defence lawyer Kate Freshwater told the court her client had changed her mind.
Ms Walker was instead remanded in custody to appear in Bendigo Magistrates' Court for a committal mention on June 12.
The court heard it was Ms Walker's first time in custody.
Ms Walker's partner at the time of Angela's death, Daniel Simmons, is also charged with child homicide.
Angela was one month away from her second birthday when she died in suspicious circumstances on July 19, 2008.
