Anya Cardilini, Project Firefighter for Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic)
How long have you been doing that for?
This is my second season.
What are you doing today?
Today I am heading to Bunyip as part of a task force to help with the fire down there.
This is the third task force to Gippsland I’ve been sent on in the past six weeks.
Why did you decide to become a firefighter?
I enjoy working outdoors and was looking for new challenges.
What do you enjoy about your job?
There are so many things I like – I really like the team I work in and I like the physical aspect of the work. It’s also great to know that when I’m fighting a fire I’m helping to protect community members, their properties and the environment.
What’s your passion? What do you really care about?
I really care about educating people in my role. I want to helping people understand how to respect and connect to nature and the land we are on and how to take care of it while still having fun in the forests.
We need to protect the forests now so that they are still around for future generations to use and enjoy.
What’s your Bendigo story?
I’m originally from the Yarra Valley but my partner is originally from Bendigo. We moved back in 2017 and shortly after I moved here I got the job with FFMVic.
What do you do on your Saturday morning?
I like to sleep in and then take my Labrador, Lunar, for walks.
What’s your guilty pleasure TV show of choice?
Watching Outlander on Netflix.
