The transformation of an old climbing lane on Strathfieldsaye Road into an extended bike lane makes perfect sense to Bendigo Bike president Nicola Dunnicliff-Wells.

Regional Roads Victoria made the change during a road sealing and line marking project with the one kilometre stretch of road between Erniold Road and Guys Hill Road getting the modification.
"It's a really good situation for anyone who wants to ride between Strathfieldsaye and Bendigo has a painted (bike) lane all the way to the centre of town," Ms Dunnicliff-Wells said.
"That section was the major gap. You can have the most beautiful bike network in world but if there's a gap, it's a major turn off."
Ms Dunnicliff-Wells said more work in hotspot CBD areas would continue to improve the relationship between cars and cyclists.
"Painted lanes are great but physical separation, that's ultimate goal," she said. "As a motorist, it would be more comfortable knowing there's physical separation from bikes that can be unpredictable and for cyclists it is same comfort from (unpredicatable cars).
"The more we can do to make cycling an attractive option, the more people can choose to ride."
The old Strathfieldsaye Road climbing lane was originally created when the speed limit was 100km/h and cars had trouble accelerating up the hill. The speed limit on the road is now 80km/h.
“Extending this bike lane efficiently improves safety for bike riders and drivers while we continue to investigate future improvements on Strathfieldsaye Road between Reservoir Road and Longlea Lane," RRV Regional Director (Northern) Brian Westley said.
Ms Dunnicliff-Wells said continuing to improve and connect the bike network across Bendigo would encourage more people to ride.
"A majority (riders) don't feel comfortable mixing with traffic so we need those connections. The improvements in infrastructure are really paying off," she said.
"It was great work on the underpass at McIvor Road, connecting the Back Creek trail to Lake Weerona. Everyone I speak to loves that underpass and it's a fantastic example of simply making that connection.
"The Bendigo Creek trial from Kangaroo Flat is being looked at, it it could be connected to Lake Weeroona, it would be another fantastic joining of those gaps."
