SOUTH Bendigo’s James Woods reached a personal high of 4.35 metres as he won the pole vault in the 11th round of Athletics Victoria shield action for Flack Advisory Bendigo Region at Flora Hill.

Woods was among a field of 90 athletes who starred in a variety of track and field events at the Latrobe University Bendigo athletics complex.
A gold medallist after he soared 4.20m in the under-18s at the country titles, Woods improved his personal best by a remarkable 15 centimetres.
Just a day after celebrating his 16th birthday, the talented teenager also leapt 1.85m to win the high jump at Saturday’s meet.
Sprint ace Sophie Taylor marked her return to the Bendigo track by winning the first of the women’s 100m heats.
Now racing for Diamond Valley, Taylor won in 12.61 seconds.
The gun athlete previously competed with Eaglehawk AC, the number one team at the past two Victoria Country championships.
In the men’s 100m, Bendigo Harriers’ Seth Hoskin raced to victory in 12.03.
Later in the day, Hoskin leapt 11.03 metres to be best at triple jump.
There were closely-fought finishes in many of the 200m heats.
Gretel Holmes from Bendigo Harriers and Anastazia Robinson from Eaglehawk were one-two as they ran 26.71 and 27.81.
Just two-hundredths of a second separated Eaglehawk’s Kathryn Heagney and South Bendigo’s Jackie Guillou as they hit the line in 33.51 and 33.63 in heat four.
Bendigo Harriers’ young gun Ben Powell took out the first of the men’s 200m heats in 22.79.
Eaglehawk’s Jamie Harrison, Bendigo Harriers’ Peter Cowell, University’s Craig Green, and Eaglehawk’s Laura Kadri won their respective 800m heats.
A great afternoon for Cowell included a 3000m victory.
Less than a week after he won 10 gold medals at the country titles, Eaglehawk’s David Chisholm starred in the 400m hurdles, triple jump, discus.
A highlight of the pole vault were the performances of son and mum, Logan Hromenko and Trudy Haines as they cleared 2.20m and 1.60m. Abbey Hromenko hit a mark of 9.95m to lead the women’s triple jump.
University’s Anthony Messerle and Bendigo Harriers’ rising star Jake Gavriladis threw the discus 37.32m and the hammer was won by Eaglehawk’s Olivia Graham, 44.38m.
