Butler, 21, is a former Sandringham-listed player, while 30-year-old Humphrey was on the Bendigo Bombers list at the same time as Maryborough’s star recruit Stewart Crameri.
Butler helped St Pauls to win the Southern Football League premiership in 2018. Humphrey played for Glenrowan in the Ovens and King Football League.
“Lachy is an inside midfielder, while Ash is a running midfielder or half-back,’’ Maryborough coach Ben Lavars said.
“They’ll be very handy for our midfield.
“In the process of talking to them and then officially meeting them last week, they come across as two high-character people.
“We’re trying to build a really good culture at the club with all the kids we have, so to get two upstanding people to the club is really positive for us.
“We have to recruit players from Melbourne, which can be difficult, but we’re really happy with getting Lachy and Ash on board.”
Lavars, who is heading into his second season in charge of the rebuilding Pies, said the mood around the club during pre-season training was positive.
“Compared to this time last year it’s much better,’’ Lavars said.
“There’s more numbers around the club, which is great, and we have a group of players training away from the club as well.
“We’re still talking to three potential senior recruits and we’re hopeful we’ll have something to announce in the next couple of weeks.”
Maryborough’s first practice match is against Harcourt on March 23.
The Pies will play South Bendigo in their BFNL season-opener at the QEO on Saturday, April 13.
