The 13-year-old won a full set of medals – gold, silver and bronze – in his first Victoria Country championships in Bendigo across the Australia Day holiday weekend.
Sebastyn’s personal best of 11.42 metres at triple jump won gold in the under-16s. His previous best was 11.12m.
A leap of 1.50m earned bronze at high jump as Seb also competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m and shot put.
Seb won silver in the under-16 4 x 100m relay and led off South’s charge in the open 4 x 400m relay.
“It was a great weekend,” Seb said.
“Racing against older and faster athletes was a great challenge.”
Seb’s skill was shown at the recently-run Athletics Victoria multi-event championships in Bendigo.
“The 400 metres is my favourite event, but the 800m and 1500m are distances I have improved a lot.”
In late June, Seb will be bound for Canada with a Sports Travel Australia squad to compete at two athletics meets in the province of British Columbia.
Seb will compete in the 100m, 200m, 400m and triple-jump at Kelowna and then at Kamloops on a tour that runs from June 26 until mid-July.
The Claude Guillou-coached athlete will compete at this weekend’s Little Athletics state multis at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium and has regionals, state titles and the AV Shield final to look forward to.
Seb trains three times a week at the LaTrobe University Bendigo athletics complex in Flora Hill.
Seb started Little Athletics in the under-11 age group and also plays footy with Maiden Gully YCW juniors.
“I had always enjoyed running, so I thought I would give athletics a go.”
Improving times and marks in athletics is always the goal for the teenager.
Seb’s events in the under-14 age group at the state multis will be discus, 100m, long jump, high jump, and 800m.
Two of his highest scoring disciplines at this month’s Athletics Victoria multis in Flora Hill were 1.50m at high jump, and 5.01m at long jump.
A group of 11 from Bendigo Little Athletics Centre has nominated for the state multi-event contests.
Away from the track there is fundraising for Seb’s trek to Canada.
A music trivia night will be held on Saturday, February 9 in the South Bendigo Football-Netball Club social rooms at the QEO from 6pm.
Tickets cost $10. Table or individual bookings close February 6 and can be sent to vanessa.milne@bigpond.com
