Tournament play is underway for the 2019 Inter-regional Country Championships at the Fosterville Gold Tennis Centre.
Tennis Victoria tournament director Shelly Hart said the championships showcased some of the best country players from throughout the state.
“Goulburn are the defending Inter-Regional champions and will be competing for a three-peat,” Hart said.
“Barwon will also be a team to beat as they had a stranglehold with several wins over the past decade.”
Victorian country regions are competing across a range of team and individual events. The event is held annually at different locations throughout the state with around 250 competitors taking to the court.

“In tennis there aren’t many team events at a grass roots level,” Hart said.
“There are people of various ages competing so it’s great to see them all together supporting each other as part of a team.”
Tournament head referee Robert Kane said participating in tournaments helped teach individuals the etiquette of tennis.
“Tournaments are important to develop the sport and to get people into the spirit of tennis,” Kane said.
“The players will be around trained officials and will learn what they can and can’t do while on court.”
The tournament will take place in Bendigo at the Fosterville Gold Tennis Centre from January 4-6.
