The advisory applies to the Northern Country and North Central forecast districts, which include Bendigo, Echuca, Castlemaine and Maryborough.
Bendigo is set to reach a top of 40 degrees today, while Echuca is heading for 42 degrees, Maryborough 39, and Castlemaine 37.
The community is advised anyone can experience heat-related illness, but people over 65, the very young and those with a pre-existing medical condition are most susceptible.
People should drink plenty of water, keep cool, avoid activities in the heat of the day, and keep an eye on those at risk, such as older people, those living alone, and pets.
Heat-related illness can range from mild conditions, such as a rash or cramps, to heatstroke, which is fatal in up to 80 per cent of cases.
People are advised to act early when a person’s health appears affected by the heat.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion, a serious condition, include paleness and sweating, rapid heart rate, muscle cramps, headache, nausea and vomiting, and dizziness or fainting.
Heatstroke may cause a person to stagger, appear confused, have a fit or collapse and become unconscious.
If heatstroke is suspected, 000 should be called immediately. The person should be taken to a cool area, have their clothing removed and their skin wet with water, and be fanned continuously.
