Non-for-profit organisation Access Australia plans to provide social inclusion programs for adults to build self-confidence, social connections and health and well-being at the old pub.
Plans for a $190,000 redevelopment of the building, which would require a significant internal rebuild, have been lodged with the City of Greater Bendigo.
According to the planning report submitted to council, activities to be undertaken will include; movement and relaxation, visual arts, literacy-numeracy, gardening, wood work, artistic metal work, healthy eating workshops and up-cycle workshops.
Access Australia, previously known as Bendigo Access Employment Inc from 1992-2015, builds skills for the less fortunate or more marginalised in society and helps them find employment.
The historic facade of the pub will remain under the plans, but a number of internal walls will be demolished to create numerous training spaces.
Minor external works are planned on the building to improve accessibility.
The training centre will operate between the hours of 8:30am – 5:00 pm Monday to Friday and 9:00am – 3:00pm Saturday and will have a maximum of 60 people on site at a given time, the planning report states.
Education group buys Newmarket Hotel
Private education group, Runhao Pty Ltd, bought the Newmarket Hotel in July and plans to use the site as its regional head office.
The company, based in Bentleigh East, declined to comment on the nature of their plans when contacted a number of times by the Bendigo Advertiser.
Colliers International selling agent Travis Hurst said the group plans to refurbish the hotel and use it as a regional head office.
The office will be located across the road from Bendigo TAFE’s Charlestone Road campus.
The City of Greater Bendigo is yet to receive a planning application for the Newmarket.
