Godfrey has a long history at the club and years of experience coaching men’s football.
“To be approached by the club and asked to be the inaugural senior women’s coach makes me feel truly honoured,” Godfrey said.
Godfrey also has experience at the club coaching the junior girl’s team, because of his family’s involvement with the game.
“A few years ago my daughter Kimberley decided she wanted to play football,” Godfrey said.
“So I went along to training and they didn’t have a coach so I got involved.”
Adjusting from coaching boys to girls was initially a challenge, with Godfrey describing it as a “learning curve”.
“After two years of coaching the girls I realised they had the same dedication and passion for playing football as the boys,” he said.
“I’m really excited and it’s a good environment for me to coach in.”
Godfrey is more than confident in the ability and has been impressed by the players who had already come on board for the upcoming season.
“The group we have put together so far – I’m amazed by their willingness to learn – they just want to keep soaking up as much information as they can,” Godfrey said.
“We’re definitely going to be competitive right off the mark and I’m very proud to be a part of it.”
Godfrey was impressed with the club’s inclusive culture which promoted the addition of the senior women’s football team.
“I’ve been around a lot of clubs throughout my involvement with sport,” Godfrey said.
“The club has always been inclusive of the girls, we are one united Eaglehawk Football Netball Club.”
The team will continue pre-season training on the club’s home turf at the Canterbury Park Oval in the coming weeks.
“We’ve got a solid squad secured at the moment, but there’s always room for more players,” he said.
The club is looking for players and any individuals who are interested in being part of the fastest growing women’s sport movement in Australia, to help with training, management and team administration.
EFNC already has under-18 and under-15 teams in the Bendigo Junior Football League, and will play in the AFL Central Victoria Senior Women’s League.
