The Australian 10km cross-country champion of the past two years, Buchanan completed the event, which doubles as the national 10,000m title, in 29 minutes 53.44 seconds.
The star from Bendigo University Athletics Club was among a field of 23 which contested the gruelling track duel.
Race winner was Tasmania’s Stewart McSweyn in 27:50.89.
Earlier in the night, Bendigo teenager Tullie Rowe raced to seventh place in the Jamieson Junior 1500m.
The young gun from University Athletics Club achieved a time of 4 minutes 44.49 seconds.
