Rarely would a player take 8-29 and not boast the best bowling figures in a game.
But that was the case for the Goers’ Fitzpatrick when he tore through the Eaglehawk line-up in round five of the Hawks’ 2016-17 premiership season with an eight-wicket haul from his 19.2 overs at Atkins Street.
Fitzpatrick claimed the first five wickets of the innings – all unassisted.
With Fitzpatrick starring, the Goers bowled the Hawks out for 116, but weren’t able to back up the good work with the ball when they were all out for 110 on the back of a superb bowling effort from Andrew Smith that surpassed Fitzpatrick’s figures.

The Power had one stage been 2-105 before losing 8-57 to be all out for 162.
After picking up the wicket of Matt Rule early in his spell, Crawford later took seven of the eight wickets to fall in the Power capitulation to finish with 8-48 off 21 overs.
Another 2-45 in the second innings gave Crawford a match haul of 10-93 at Strauch Reserve as part of a season in which he finished with 38 wickets.

After Nathan Fitzpatrick’s 8-29 for Bendigo, Eaglehawk veteran Smith came out and bagged a brilliant 8-27 off 23.3 overs – including the first six of the Goers’ innings – in a six-run victory at Atkins Street.
Aged 42 at the time, Smith’s 8-27 – three which were caught by Josh Collinson – followed his 5-42 against Sandhurst the previous round, prompting his skipper Cory Jacobs to say: “To be averaging six (6.46) with the ball in his 40s; it’s crazy to think how good he is going. He’s the most competitive, self-driven and loyal man you will ever meet.”

Trollope produced Golden Square’s best bowling performance for 16 seasons on a day in which his side routed White Hills for just 64 at Scott Street.
After Darren Clutton snared three of the first four wickets – Trollope got the other early breakthrough – Trollope then bagged the last six to finish with 7-18 off 14 overs, with his effort the best for Square since Bruce Hando’s 7-38, also against White Hills, in 2001-02.
Another three wickets in the second innings gave Trollope – who is due to play his 100th first XI game for Golden Square against Strathdale-Maristians on Saturday – a match haul of 10-46 off 32 overs.

The catalyst for this look at each club’s best bowling performances of the 2000s following Ward’s stellar 8-39 off 21 overs in last week’s win over Eaglehawk at Canterbury Park.
Ward’s figures rank No.1 for the Power since their formation in 2001-02 and came against the team that at the time was sitting on top of the ladder.
Ward had taken five of his wickets after just 6.1 overs, at which stage he had 5-14, while seven of his dismissals were either catches by wicket-keeper Brodie McRae (three) or Shehan De Silva (four) at slip.

You could be easily forgiven for thinking Adam Burns would have Kangaroo Flat’s best bowling figures of the 2000s, but he doesn’t – it’s leg-spinner Chris Barber.
Barber bagged what are the Roos’ all-time best bowling figures of 8-27 off 18.2 overs in the second innings against White Hills at Dower Park in the final round of the 2015-16 season – a game in which he helped himself to 11 wickets after also taking three in the first innings.
Barber’s effort against the Demons was his second eight-wicket haul of 2015-16 after he also snared 8-88 against Eaglehawk in round six.
While he doesn’t have the No.1 spot, the Roos’ top 20 bowling figures of the 2000s features Burns 13 times.

Howard’s sublime bowling performance of 9-60 off 30.1 overs against his former side ranks No.1 in the BDCA through the 2000s, and also the all-time best figures for the Dragons.
And it came in a thrilling one-run win when, defending 131 at Weeroona Oval, the Dragons bowled the Suns out for 130, with Howard taking the match-winning wicket when he bowled Sam Johnston.
The team-mate who cost Howard the chance of taking all 10 wickets for the innings was Sam Sperling, who removed Daniel Clohesy.
Howard’s nine wickets came from four different modes – bowled (3), lbw (3), stumped (2) and caught (1).

Bendigo United’s Harold Hall in 1907-08 and Eaglehawk’s Joe Finch in 1926-27 are the only players in BDCA first XI history to take all 10 wickets in an innings.
But on January 21, 2017, Suns’ leg-spinner Taylor was on the verge of becoming the third when Strathfieldsaye was 9-150 and Taylor had all nine wickets at Tannery Lane.
Taylor then had 41 opportunities to bowl at the last pair of Bodee Scullie and No.11 Michael Curtis.
However, the one wicket he needed to bowl his way into BDCA folklore eluded Taylor when Curtis nicked a cut-shot to Andrew Hosking at slip off Ben DeAraugo.
Rather than the rare 10-wicket feat, Taylor instead had to settle for “just” the best bowling figures in Suns’ history of 9-66 off 30 overs, before he chimed in with 77 with the bat on day two the following week.

Devanny delivered Strathfieldsaye’s No.1 all-time bowling performance in a tied game against the Power at Tannery Lane in January of 2015.
After the Jets compiled 158 batting first, the teams were forced to split the points after the Power were also dismissed for 158.
Devanny’s haul of 8-51 off 21 overs featured seven of his wickets being unassisted – six bowled and one lbw – with his bowling heroics backing up his unbeaten 95 with the bat on day one.
However, it wasn’t Devanny who took the wicket that ended the game in a tie. That was emerging Jets’ paceman Xavier Crone, who bowled Matt Rule.

What are still the Demons’ best bowling figures of the 2000s came in the opening weeks of the new century.
Roulston’s 8-63 off 21 overs against Golden Square at Scott Street was taken on February 5, 2000, and haven’t been surpassed since as both the Demons’ best of the 2000s and No.1 all-time first XI bowling figures.
Despite Roulston’s valiant effort, Golden Square still amassed 278 and won the game by 144 runs.
Two more wickets in the second innings gave Roulston 10-80 for the match.
