GOLDEN Square’s Wade Street will be clear to play on in the BDCA this Saturday – weather permitting – despite one of its pitches being vandalised earlier this week.
Following a downpour of rain on Sunday one of Golden Square’s pitches was damaged by footmarks being left down the middle of the wicket by what the club has been informed was two people running on it.
The club made its disappointment clear in a Facebook post with accompanying pictures, saying: “This type of behavior is unacceptable and the police were notified straight away. Make no mistake, this is vandalism plain and simple.”
“It was the pitch that we used throughout the first five rounds and not one that we’d be using this weekend,” Golden Square president Max Grant said on Thursday.
“The main reason for the post on social media is trying to get the awareness out there that it’s unacceptable for this to happen. If we were to find the people who did it, it would be good to let them know just how disappointing it is.

“Our curator Kieran Burke has worked really hard this week to patch it up. He was obviously upset when we found out about it… thankfully, there was someone up stairs in the clubrooms at the time and they got straight on the speaker and yelled out and the two people that we believe were teenagers basically legged it straight away.
“If no one had been at the rooms at the time I’d hate to think the damage that could have been caused.
“Kieran puts an enormous amount of time and effort into curating and it does cost a lot of money to get a wicket up each week.
“We’re all volunteers and things like this have the potential for people to just say, ‘stuff it, why do I even bother’.
“Hopefully, our post will encourage people in the area to keep an eye out in the future on things like this.”
Wade Street is scheduled to host the match of the round in the BDCA this Saturday between Golden Square and Strathdale-Maristians.
• Other games this Saturday – Bendigo United v Sandhurst, Huntly-North Epsom v Kangaroo Flat, Strathfieldsaye v Bendigo, White Hills v Eaglehawk (QEO).
