It follows the crash on Fogertys Gap Road yesterday evening, when police believe a blue Commodore station wagon and a cyclist collided.
UPDATE: 6.00am: Fogertys Gap Road has reopened to traffic after yesterday evening’s fatal collision.
The road was opened at 2am, Acting Sergeant David Semmens of the Castlemaine Police said.
Major Collision Investigation Unit members stayed in the region overnight as they continued their investigation into the cause of the crash.
UPDATE: 12.20am: Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Darren Williams has highlighted the toll road trauma takes on all involved, following yesterday’s fatal crash in Ravenswood South.
“It’s going to be a terrible time for us,” he said.
“We don’t like this time of the year because of the road deaths and road trauma is terrible.
“We always push the message that unfortunately with these type of events there’s going to be an empty chair at the Christmas table this year.”
Detective Sergeant Williams said it was too soon to say what caused the crash, which occurred just before 6.30pm yesterday.
“The driver of the vehicle stopped and is assisting police with our inquiries,” he said.
UPDATE: 10.35pm: A male cyclist has died after a collision at Ravenswood this evening.
It is believed a blue Commodore station wagon travelling east on Fogartys Gap Road collided with a cyclist near the Calder Highway about 6.25pm.
The male cyclist, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
The driver, a man aged in his 60s was arrested and is in custody.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are on scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and are keen to speak to any witnesses.

EARLIER: A cyclist and car have collided on Fogartys Gap Road, between Ravenswood and Maldon.
The road is closed from the intersection with Leversha Road near the Calder Highway, and at the intersection of Woodbrook and Fogartys Gap Road, while emergency services are on scene.
The Victoria Police major collision unit is en route.
The collision occurred about 6.25pm.
The crash comes almost a year after Bendigo cyclist Jason Lowndes was killed while on a cycling ride at Mandurang.
