Police saw the 51-year-old driving on Marong Road in the early hours of July 18.
When they checked the vehicle’s registration plates, the officers found they were not on the VicRoads database.
While suspended, the man had a permit allowing him to drive during the day.
After he was pulled over, he admitted he put the false registration plates on the vehicle so he could also drive at night without being noticed.
The man’s licence had been suspended for three months earlier in July for demerit points.
His vehicle was also unregistered.
Defence lawyer Peter Cutting told the court his client needed a licence to work, as he was a seasonal harvest worker.
The man said he had accumulated demerit points because of speeding.
In sentencing, magistrate Patrick Southey noted the man’s guilty plea.
