A sign of the breeze were wind readings such as -6.0, -5.1 and -4.1 in the 100m sprint duels.
Melbourne University’s Christian Paynter showed his all-round skill as he won his 400m heat, reigned supreme in his long jump and javelin flights, and was runner-up at shot put.
Among the many highs was the 400m in which South Bendigo ace Jake Hilson faced Bendigo Harriers’ Luke Padgham in his comeback to the track.
The one-lap dash was won by Hilson in 51.09 from Padgham in 53.63.
Melbourne University’s Matthew Schepisi faced strong opposition from University’s rising star Jayden Padgham in heat one of the 1500m.
A great contest ended in a win for Schepisi, 4:32.78, from Padgham, 4:35.22; and Eaglehawk’s James Bentley, 4:38.10.
Other heat winners in the 1500m were Lachlan Carr from Bendigo Harriers, and University’s Phoebe Lonsdale.
Stephanie Pompei was victorious in the first of the women’s 400m heats in 65.83.
The final event of the day on the track was the mixed 4 x 100m relay.
Heat one was won by Eaglehawk’s line-up of Kenan Seebah, James Bentley, Lachlan Start and Corey Heagney in 47.37, as Bendigo Harriers’ Ryan Morrisy, Daniel Baldwin, Seth Hoskin and Luke Matthews were runner-up in 47.50.
Fastest of the women’s teams was Bendigo Harriers’ Jalen Hoskin, Nyan Brits, Emma Gilligan and Jackelyn Burge in 54.80.
Best at long jump were Christian Paynter, 6.70m; Heagney, 5.92; Seth Hoskin, 5.35; as Eaglehawk’s Denise Snyder was best of the women at 5.25m.
Flight two included the javelin duel between Paynter, 49.75m; Eaglehawk’s Lachlan Start, 44.66m; and University’s Anthony Meserle, 42.62m.
In-form South Bendigo star Emma Berg again shone as she put the shot to a mark of 14.94m in flight one as Paynter, 13.47m, and Mackenzie Cooper from Bendigo Harriers, 11.50m, were next best.
A non-shield meet to be run next Saturday at Latrobe University Bendigo Athletics Complex in Retreat Road includes the mile.
