Police are investigating whether one of the cars involved in today’s Bagshot crash was involved in a petrol drive off earlier in the day.
In the aftermath of the crash Bendigo Highway Patrol’s Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks admonished drivers who failed to slow to 40km/h as they passed the scene.
“It’s the law. Slow down around stationary emergency services vehicles,” he said.
“We had ambulance paramedics working on both sides of the road, we had police cars here assisting the tow trucks as best we could and we still had cars ripping past us at 100km an hour.”
Even as Sergeant Brooks spoke with the Bendigo Advertiser at the scene cars were travelling past at speed.
“Here comes another one. There is no way that truck is doing 40. And he (the driver) just looked at me like I had four heads,” Senior Sergeant Brooks said.
“People are just not paying attention. Yes, the law came in recently, but I would have thought after four or five months people would have time to start playing the game.”
Senior Sergeant Brooks noted that people had to slow down in both lanes on a road that was not separated.
“It’s not about us trying to get extra tickets, it’s about us protecting emergency workers on the sides of the road,” he said.
“If it takes an emergency services worker to get killed before the message gets through, I pity the poor person that happens to. I really do.”
Police cleared the scene by 12.45pm and said further enquiries would be conducted into one of the drivers involved in today’s crash.
They would investigate reports the driver of the southbound silver Commodore ute may have committed other offences.
“At the moment there is an allegation that he may have been involved in a theft of petrol. We are still trying to ascertain whether it was his car or not,” Senior Sergeant Brooks said.
He said ammunition and drug paraphernalia were also found in the car.
