The four-year-old finished second behind the smart Tony McEvoy-trained three-year-old Winning Partner, who broke her maiden status at start number five following some competitive efforts in a quartet of metropolitan-class two-year-old races in the autumn.
It was an encouraging display from the Osborne-trained galloper, who failed to set the world on fire in his only previous start as a colt at Werribee in May.
“His form last prep was not indicative of what he has shown us,” he said.
“He went to the races as a colt and he lost his mojo … it was a shocker at Werribee.
“We just sent him out, had him cut and started with a blank canvas and his work has been good, his trials have been good and barrier one helped the cause.
“He ran up to expectations; we thought he’d run a good race.
“He was beaten by a better one on the day, but he’ll win a race soon.
“The winner looks pretty handy, but that tells us where we are going.
“We’ll see how he pulls up, but we’ll keep him at that distance for the moment.”
Osborne had two other runners on Wednesday, the best of which Nothing Like A Saga finished midfield behind the Darren Weir-trained winner Dennis over 1100 metres.
He will have a pair of runners today at Geelong and has Uptown Lily accepted for Friday night’s meeting at Moonee Valley.
