The Roos dominated with bat and ball, winning the pool two clash by nine wickets with more than eight overs to spare.
Adam Burns set the tone with the ball for the Roos striking twice early on before leg-spinner Chris Barber chipped in with two more wickets to leave the Dragons 4-27. Taylor Beard (40 off 30 balls) did his best to lift Sandhurst, but when he fell the Dragons’ innings lost momentum and they were restricted to 9-93.
Burns (3-9 off four overs) and Brent Hamblin (3-17 off four overs) were best with the ball for the Roos.
In reply, Matt Dwyer and Daniel Barber put the Sandhurst bowlers to the sword.
Dwyer smashed 44 not out off 28 balls and Barber 40 off 22 balls as the Roos rocketed to 1-95 off 11.3 overs. Between them Dwyer and Barber hit nine fours and five sixes.
In the other pool two game, reigning T20 premier White Hills proved too good for Golden Square.
The Bulldogs had the Demons on the ropes when spinner Matt Christie (3-19) took three wickets in an over to leave the visitors 4-46.
Gavin Bowles and Rhys Irwin saved the White Hills innings. From 6-79 they added an unbeaten 61 for the seventh wicket, including a match-defining 41 off the final three overs, to life the Demons to 6-140.
Bowles finished unbeaten on 71 off 55 balls, while Irwin was 22 off 16 balls.
Square never gained any momentum with the bat. Bowles completed a fine match by running out Square star Tim Wood with a direct hit from point.
Mick Peters (3-8) had a good night with the ball. He claimed the prized wicket of Square marquee player Ryan Hartley for 19. Linc Jacobs (3-15) did some late damage as Square finished 9-93.
In pool one, Eaglehawk scored an impressive 18-run win over Bendigo.
A blistering 46 off 29 balls by recruit Russell Stockdale was the highlight of the Borough’s total of 9-151. Broadie Hawke relished the opportunity to bat in the top-order and he made a brisk 31.
In reply, none of the Goers’ top-order were able to go on and post a score of 50-plus.
Tom Hart (32 off 19) and marquee player Cade Mueller (28 off 36), a late replacement for James Seymour, threatened to get Bendigo back into the game, but they both fell to Borough medium-pacer Aaron Monro (4- 25).
Great batting from Andrew Chalkey and James Vlaeminck set up Strathdale-Maristians’ 18-run win over Huntly-North Epsom.
Chalkey (75 off 50 balls) and Vlaeminck (46 off 36) added 67 for the second wicket in the Suns’ total of 9-156.
Some late heroics with the bat from Adam Ward (58 off 37 balls) lifted the Power run rate, but they never really looked like chasing down the Suns’ total and they finished 5-138 from 20 overs.
Ward was also the Power’s best bowler with figures of 3-29.
Round two of the T20 competition is next Tuesday night – Bendigo Cup eve.
In pool one, Bendigo is at home to Strathdale, while Bendigo United hosts Huntly-North Epsom.
In pool two, Strathfieldsaye plays Golden Square at Tannery Lane and Kangaroo Flat is at home to White Hills.
