The council will lease the site from the Minister for Education for 15 years for a nominal fee, and will now take steps towards formal lease agreements with employment charity Workspace and the Castlemaine Hot Rod Centre.
Under the agreement, Castlemaine Secondary College will continue to have access to some of the site, as will community groups.
“This is a wonderful example of an innovative and collaborative partnership to enable the former secondary college campus be re-purposed into a thriving community hub,” Mount Alexander Shire mayor Bronwen Machin said.
The council will invite submissions on its intention and the proposed leases.
Further consultation will be undertaken in the future to determine how to use the site’s former oval.
