The amendment proposes two overlays: one on land subject to highest flood risk, and another on land affected by riverine flooding, which occurs about every 100 years.
Buildings and developments subject to these overlays could be required to undertake measures to reduce the impact of flooding.
The amendment also includes new flood mapping boundaries, based on updated modelling by the North Central Catchment Management Authority.
It will now go to the Planning Minister for approval.
The amendment was one of 10 recommendations in the Castlemaine, Campbells Creek and Chewton Flood Management Plan.
Mount Alexander Shire’s acting development and infrastructure director Ben Grounds said the council was also working to secure funding for six new levees around Castlemaine, Campbells Creek and Newstead.
More information on the amendment is available online.
