The event will be the first VWA event to be held in Bendigo in more than 30 years and Harwood is excited to be competing.
“I have been training really hard and want to continue to improve and represent Australia,” said Harwood, who started in the sport while studying at Bendigo Senior Secondary College.
Her coach and mentor, Troy Hewkins who is a former international weightlifter and Australian champion, has been working in the background to help give opportunities to local aspiring weightlifters, and this competition is part of a long-term plan to build the sport in Bendigo.
VWA president Tim Fry said it was great to see so many athletes coming from around Victoria to compete in Bendigo.

“We have lifters from Geelong and Melbourne together with a contingent from Bendigo. It should be a great event,” he said.
Local organisers have been assisted in hosting this event by Arj Perera, from Human Mechanics.
“We would not have been able to do this with out the support of Arj and all the local enthusiasts,” Fry said.
“Weightlifting gives athletes of all ages and size a chance to compete in a sport which requires strength, speed and flexibility in a safe environment”.
The competition will be held on this Saturday, starting at 11 am, and will feature over 30 weightlifters in both women’s and men’s events.
