Haig finished 19th in the gruelling event, just one minute and 21 seconds behind the winner Alejandro Valverde.
Haig, who rides for Mitchelton-Scott, was the leading Australian in the brutal six-and-a-half hour race.
Fellow Bendigo rider Chris Hamilton also made his world championship debut.
Hamilton did plenty of work for his team-mates in the early stages of the race.
