Police were called to Furness Street just before 8pm with reports a trailer had rolled after a driver failed to negotiate a turn.
The 50-year-old male driver was breath tested and gave a reading of 0.288, the highest reading Senior Constable Andrew Henderson had seen in his time with Highway Patrol.
The driver avoided injury and was taken back to Bendigo Police Station. His car was impounded and the trailer was written off after sustaining heavy damage.
He will appear in court at a later date on careless driving and drink driving charges.
No other motorists were involved in the crash.
Senior Constable Henderson said the man had been drinking after work and had decided to drive into Bendigo.
“Don’t drink and drive, simple as that,” he said.
Highway Patrol members are carrying out random breath tests and oral fluid tests throughout central Victoria as part of Operation Scoreboard on the AFL Grand Final long weekend.
Despite getting off to a poor start on Thursday, officers were happy with the behaviour of motorists on Friday and Saturday with no incidents of note.
The operation concludes at midnight tonight.
