Event organiser Camilo Demarco said building billy carts and networks within the community was the motto of the event.
“My hope is to get families and groups working together as well as creating partnerships and relationships that wouldn’t usually connect. It’s also about old school fun and getting kids outside away from screens to build a stronger community,” Mr Demarco said.
The event is part of Mental Health Week and will help to raise funds for Nalderun, an Aboriginal community support service.
Mr Demarco said it was great to see parents working with their children building billy carts.
Antonio Flyger has spent the last few weeks tinkering away in his garage with son Marcel and daughter Martika, building billy carts for the 2018 race.
“I had been saving lots of materials over the years...it’s fun once you go into your junkyard and pull something out that you’ve been keeping for a long time, Mr Flyger said.
“It’s mostly all recycled material but I did buy high-end bicycle hubs and then I built everything around them.
“I’m a former bicycle mechanic, car mechanic and backyard engineer so building billy carts is right up my ally.”
The event will include traditional billy carts with kids who will race part of the hill all the way to professional level racers who will race all the way from the top.
The race will be held on Sunday October 14, starting at 10am.
