The 29-year-old was announced as the Bendigo Braves new head coach on Thursday, replacing the retired Ben Harvey.
After 60 games with the Braves at SEABL level, Hogan was forced to call time on his playing career at the end of June because of ongoing concussion issues.
He stayed on at the club as an assistant coach under Harvey and that experience whet his appetite for a senior coaching position.
“I’d always been a player, but they say those who can’t do, teach,’’ Hogan said.
“Maybe I’m more suited to coaching. I love learning and sharing what knowledge I have.”
Employing a 29-year-old with no senior coaching experience could be seen as a risky move.
Hogan’s predecessor Harvey couldn’t disagree more.
The general manager of sport at Bendigo Stadium said Hogan had all the attributes of a successful head coach.
“We had to find what is best for Bendigo basketball and we felt that David ticked all the boxes,’’ Harvey said.
“He’s invested in Bendigo basketball, he’s invested in the juniors coming through. What he lacks in experience he’ll have the right people around him to help him.
“He understands the game, he understands the league. He has what it takes.”
Hogan said his previous coaches had played a major role in moulding his coaching philosophy.
“I’m more inclined to focus on the defensive end,’’ Hogan said.
“I’m more of a thinker than getting animated. If you get too high or too low emotions get in the way of making decisions. I’m more a mild-mannered type of guy… hopefully the players respond to that.”
One of his first jobs is to work on a playing contract with his older brother Chris.
The Braves’ games record holder is weighing up his playing future.
“He’s excited, I think. I’m not sure he wants me to tell him what to do,’’ David Hogan said of Chris.
The Braves pre-season program will start in November.
