Jesse Birrell, 34, was sentenced in the County Court in Bendigo on Thursday after pleading guilty to two counts of recklessly causing serious injury, two counts of making threats to kill and other charges.

The stabbing victim walked 1.5 kilometres to seek medical attention from a shop on Mitchell Street, while a woman was hospitalised with a fractured nose and cheekbone after she was also attacked by Birrell.

The court heard Birrell arrived at a house on Abbott Street at 2.30pm on October 13, 2016, where he had a dispute with two people.

Birrell pulled a knife on a man and a struggle started in which the victim sustained lacerations to his thigh and hands.

He punched the female victim to the face multiple times, then threatened to kill both while continuing to brandish the knife shouting “where’s my money you dog” and “give me all your s--t you dog”.

Birrell stole a bag from the house which contained mobile phones, a bank card and personal identification before fleeing the scene.

The male victim walked to Metal Mosh on Mitchell Street to seek medical attention from a friend, and police were called.

The female victim was taken to Bendigo Health where she spent the night with facial injuries.

Birrell was arrested the next day when he was found hiding in the rear yard of a premises on Wells Street in Long Gully.

He was “severely drug affected” and had not slept for five days. He gave a “no comment” interview to police.

The court was told Birrell had long-standing mental health and drug addiction problems stemming from an abusive childhood.

He has six prior convictions for assault, four for dishonesty offences and was jailed for five years in 2010.

Judge Howard Mason said it appeared the jail sentence had not deterred Birrell from committed further offences.

He said the presence of the knife made the threats to kill more concerning for the victims.

“The circumstances present a picture of a terrifying ordeal, threats, assault and… stabbing with a knife resulting in multiple wounds,” Judge Mason said.

Birrell was jailed for five years with a non-parole period of three years. He has already served 699 days.
