A book box has been installed in the Mall, featuring books supplied by the library.
The concept for the book box is for people to read and borrow books and then return them afterwards for other members of the community to enjoy.
City of Greater Bendigo public spaces and activation officer Karen Cresswell first saw a similar initiative in Geelong and thought it would work well in Bendigo.
“We hope parents and grandparents will come to the mall and spend time reading to children,” Mrs Cresswell said.
There are plans to introduce another box within the mall in the future with magazines and other literature for adults.
Lucy Dickson’s son Lennon enjoyed accessing books from the box.
“This is fantastic for families to come here and use it as a resource, it means everyone can have access to books,” Mrs Dickson said.
“The concept also teaches children about sharing and swapping books.”
