TO use an American sports “game seven” term, next Saturday’s North Central league clash between Sea Lake Nandaly and St Arnaud is shaping up as “win or go home”.
With one round left, fourth spot is still to be decided, with any of Sea Lake Nandaly (28 points), Wedderburn (26) and St Arnaud (26) all still capable of snaring it.
Given the Redbacks will go in as major underdogs against flag favourite Birchip-Watchem in the last round, it means there is the likelihood that the match between the Saints and Tigers at St Arnaud will be the game that decides fourth.
Saturday’s round 15 matches featured the two biggest blowout results of the season as Birchip-Watchem and Wedderburn both recorded 91-point victories.
The Redbacks thumped St Arnaud 17.21 (123) to 3.14 (32) at home in what was their biggest win since 2014.
The Saints didn’t kick a goal in the first half, with their score at the main break 0.8.
The 91-point margin was in stark contrast to the first two meetings of the season between the two teams, which was a three-point win to the Saints in round one and a draw in round eight.
• Birchip-Watchem thumped Donald 16.16 (112) to 3.3 (21).
Excluding the Bulls’ three games in which they had their score annulled to zero for a player points breach – one of which was against Donald in round one – the Royal Blues’ tally was the league’s lowest of the season.
• In Saturday’s other two games Charlton comfortably beat Boort 14.9 (93) to 5.9 (39) to avenge two earlier defeats this year to the Magpies, and Wycheproof-Narraport defeated Sea Lake Nandaly 11.7 (73) to 6.11 (47).
