Gretgrix is recovering from a grade three medial ligament injury suffered in last month's win over Castlemaine.
The star full-forward originally thought his season was over, but recent conversations with his physiotherapist Theo Kapakoulakis have given the premiership star some hope.
"My knee is in a brace for another three weeks and then I'll start running again,'' Gretgrix said.
"I'm hopeful that I can get back for the finals. I'm up against it a bit because, unfortunately, there's no quick fix.
"I do like my quick fixes normally, but that's not the case this time.
"Theo has given me a bit more hope and I'm going to get out and do some boxing with Locky (Damien Lock) and Tuddy (Scott Tuddenham).
"I'll do everything I can to get back... I won't die wondering, that's for sure."
Gretgrix's stellar career with the Borough is reaching its conclusion, but he hasn't ruled out adding another chapter in 2019.
"I love the club and I want to be around it as long as I can,'' Gretgrix said.
"I'd much rather stick around (Eaglehawk) than go elsewhere (district footy).
"Unfortunately, the body can only keep up with the pace of Bendigo footy for so long."
The Hawks started 2018 as premiership favourite, but that title now belongs to Strathfieldsaye.
A couple of indifferent performances mid-season put the Hawks' premiership credentials in doubt, but Gretgrix said the form slump might turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
"I think we turned the corner against Golden Square (last Saturday),'' Gretgrix said.
"That's probably some of the most exciting footy we've played all season.
"The loss to Gisborne was a wake-up call for a few players.
"We're starting to get some momentum and we're starting to get a few players back."
Second-placed Eaglehawk could all but guarantee itself a top-three berth if it defeats third-placed Kyneton at Canterbury Park this Saturday.
