But what does it take to boast the best fish and chips in Australia?
A national competition is casting a line for the best chippie in the country, with consumers soon to be asked to have their say.
The competition netted almost 100,000 votes last year, with the Northern Territory’s Frying Nemo coming out on top.
Traditionalists maintained the best way to eat fish and chips was fresh from the fryer with fingers from paper wrappings as waves crashed and gulls hovered, according to competition organisers from the The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation.
The group’s general manager for communications, marketing and trade, Peter Horvat said that based on last year’s award and feedback from consumers, the nation’s pick of the fish included King George whiting, pink ling, Spanish mackerel and snapper.
Flake was popular nationally, as it was on the Kennington Fish Shop’s menu.
“No matter where you go, everybody is familiar with it. It’s no real comparison to other fish. We would sell 70 flake for every 15 of some of our other types,” he said.
Other popular fish Mr Parker’s customers asked for included blue grenadier, whiting and butterfish.
In the search for deep fired excellence, the public even had strong views on potatoes.
The reigning champion of the Australian chip business is reportedly the Russet Burbank - a floury spud that’s said to make the best chips, Mr Horvat said.
“But it has challengers including the Sebago, Atlantic, Ranger Russet, Kennebec, Shepody and the Australian-bred Coliban, among others,” he said.
A Bendigo Advertiser poll last year found the city’s favourite chips came from Schnitz, though suburban fish and chip shops including Lyttleton Terrace Takeaway, Mick’s Fish and Peter’s Fish Shop also made the final cut.
For the latest competition, consumers will be able to nominate and vote for their favourite shops through the competition’s the people’s choice state award, while a panel of experts will decide the national judged fish and chip award.
Voting for the awards starts on 1 August 2018 and closes on 15 September 2018. Winners will be announced on 15 October 2018. For more, visit www.fishandchipsawards.com.au
