Patrons were surprised to see the High Street pub closed on Monday with a sign on the door apologising for any inconvenience.
“It is with deep regret that we have been placed in an untenable position and have had to close the hotel indefinitely,” the sign reads.
According to the hotel’s website, the pub dates to the 1800s and operated as a southern tram terminal for services out of the city centre.
Business and property owners attached to the hotel have declined to comment.
The Golden Square Hotel is the latest pub to close in the Bendigo area following the City Family Hotel, The Huntly pub and the Black Swan.
The three popular watering holes closed their doors within 10 months of each other last year.
