Firefighters were called to a home on the Elmore-Barnadown Road about 3.40am, after reports a blanket left in front of the fire had caught alight and the house was filling with smoke.
Two adults and two children were home at the time.
Paramedics attended and assessed the occupants at the scene, but no one required transportation to hospital.
Figures from the CFA show there were almost 1600 preventable house fires in Victoria last year, causing more than $42 million in damage.
Most of these preventable fires started in the kitchen, followed by the lounge room.
