The 19-year-old admitted to police his actions were “pure stupidity” and it was fortunate no other cars were on the road at the time.
The man pleaded guilty in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to two charges.
Police spotted him driving at 120 kilometres per hour on Houston Street – a 60 zone – around 10pm on March 10. He had three passengers in the car at the time.
The court heard the man had a P1 licence and was only allowed to have one passenger.
His speed remained constant for 150 metres.
He was pulled over on Hattam Street and admitted the stupidity of his actions to police.
When asked what would have happened if anyone pulled out onto the road at the time, the man responded “someone would probably be dead”.
His car was impounded for 28 days.
Prosecutors recommended he be entered into a road trauma awareness course.
Magistrate Sarah Leighfield said forcing the man to take the course was a more effective form of punishment than a fine, because he will learn more from his actions.
“If someone had stepped out onto the road, or pulled out from the side, you could very well have killed yourself, your passengers or people in other vehicles,” she said.
“Going at that sort of pace is really really dangerous and you’ve acknowledged that when you’ve spoken to police as well.
“You’re just lucky that nothing happened, you really are.”
He was placed on an adjourned undertaking without conviction and will be required to complete a road trauma awareness course.
His licence was disqualified for 12 months.
