It will be illegal for people to collect firewood on public land from July 1 with on-the-spot fines of up to $645 and, for offences that go to court, fines of up to $8059, one-year imprisonment or both.
Forest Fire Management Victoria acting district manager Adrian Parker said all designated firewood collection areas will be closed over the winter period.
“Firewood collection may have already ceased in some parts of the state where supplies are exhausted or where rainfall or flooding has affected track conditions making collection unsafe,” he said.
“Designated fire collection areas typically provide green firewood. Those looking for dry firewood are encouraged to look to alternate providers as it is unlikely that the collection areas will have dry fallen timber in them during collection seasons.
“Firewood collected at these sites is for personal use only and cannot be sold.
“People are also reminded that firewood collection from roadsides is not permitted.
“FFMVic staff will be patrolling parks, forests and reserves during winter to ensure people are doing the right thing."
The Spring domestic firewood collection season begins on September 1.
