Their pro-active approach appears to have averted potential awkwardness when the pair go into camp for next month's three-Test home series against Six Nations champions Ireland.

The devout Folau's controversial social media post saying God's plan for gay people was hell if they didn't repent would clearly not find support from Pocock, who advocated for same-sex marriage to be legalised and has been part of anti-homophobia campaigns.

The pair were among the senior Wallabies to gather on the Gold Coast approximately a fortnight ago, where coach Michael Cheika detailed his plans for a pivotal year ahead of the 2019 World Cup.

"(Folau and Pocock) were together talking. I know they've been talking as well and communicating since the camp," Cheika told reporters on Wednesday.

"If anything it allows them to have more of a connection in the fact they can discuss whatever they're talking about and getting on with it. Because that's exactly what they've been able to do.

"Not everyone always agrees with each other but when we get out here and play in the jersey together, we all get along.

"Rugby is a game where everyone can play and everyone can get along ... it always has been. Look at me, I was one of the few ethnic kids playing rugby at the time and nobody said boo to me, it was 'come and play, do your best'."

Gareth Thomas, who won 100 international caps for Wales and came out publicly as gay in 2009, recently suggested Folau had put "a lot of people in awkward situations... Cheika is having to almost distance himself from a player."

Cheika, who will next week name his squad for the series against world No.2 Ireland that begins in Brisbane on June 9, insisted Folau's views on homosexuality won't be a distraction next month.

"He does understand it (the potential for his views to be a distraction), yeah, but what's more important is that he doesn't want to create that," Cheika told reporters.

"He wants to play the footy he's been playing the last few weeks, which has been awesome.

"It's not going to be an issue, because it's not going to be ongoing. You can interpret it how you like."

Cheika is mulling a series of questions about his squad selection and indeed the XV that will face Ireland, most notably who will be at hooker in the absence of rested veteran Tatafu Polota-Nau.

"There's four young hookers around the scene that we're looking at, possibly even a fifth," he said.

Cheika is confident key halfback Will Genia (knee) will be fit for the Suncorp Stadium showdown with Ireland, who haven't won in Australia since 1979.
