The Loddon Valley Football Netball League’s return to inter-league action was a successful one.
After a two-year hiatus from the AFL Victoria Community Championships, the LVFNL outclassed Golden Rivers, 14.13 (97) to 7.11 (53), at the QEO.
It was Loddon Valley’s first win at inter-league level since 2011.
“I’m proud that the league is back in inter-league footy and we were able to win,’’ LVFNL coach Anthony Dennis said.
“It’s a massive achievement for the league to get a win. Full credit to the 22 players who represented the league today because they all contributed to the win.”
The LVFNL set up the win with a brilliant patch in the second quarter.
A 1.5 to 0.1 first term was not indicative of LVFNL’s first term dominance, but a four-goal burst at the start of the second quarter broken the game open.
Forward Andrew Gladman was the catalyst for the LVFNL.
In a half of footy where other forwards were finding it hard to mark, Gladman clunked everything that came his way and he kicked two goals in a minute at the start of the second quarter.
The LVFNL kicked four goals in 14 minutes to open up a 37-2 lead midway through the quarter.
It took until the 23-minute mark of the second term for Golden Rivers to kick their first goal of the game.
The visitors added three goals in five minutes to cut the margin to 14 points late in the quarter.
A clever kick from LVFNL midfielder Jarrod Fitzpatrick set up a set shot for Nick Arthur on the half-time siren. Arthur calmly slotted the goal fro 35m out to give LVFNL a 20-point lead at half-time.
In general play, Golden Rivers had much the better of the third quarter, but it was the LVFNL who had the better on the scoreboard.
Golden Rivers wasted opportunities, while in contrast the LVFNL kicked a couple of crucial goals, including a brilliant team goal when they moved the ball from the back pocket the length of the ground and Liam Jacques finished the move with a running major.
LVFNL looked home when at three quarter-time, but Golden Rivers kept coming.
The visitors cut the margin to 23 points midway through the final quarter and they had all the momentum.
Luke Gray bobbed up for LVFNL and snapped his third goal to steady the ship.
That took the wind out of Golden Rivers’ sails and Jacques and James Rippingale added two more goals to finish the job.
Gladman was a deserved winner of the LVFNL’s best player.
Jacques, Arthur, Nick Waterson, Fitzpatrick and ruckman Chris Down were solid through the middle of the ground, while Justin Laird and Matt Magee led the defence superbly.
Golden Rivers’ best player was midfielder Thomas Isma.
