Aitken has been named a finalist in this year’s Archibald Prize for the second time in his short career.
The young painter’s portrait of fellow artist Natasha Bieniek demonstrates his continuing development as an artist, refining his unique style of capturing the figure.
Aitken draws on both a painterly skill with materials and an insight grasp of selfie culture imagery.
The work of the artist is currently on display at La Trobe Art Institute, with a series of 10 collaborative paintings he has produced with the renowned Jon Cattapan.
Interestingly, Aitken’s first time as an Archibald finalist was achieved on the strength of his portrait of Cattapan in 2016.
Out of the relationship they developed from this encounter, they began working together on paintings.
The result of that partnership, and the vibrant intensity of their series ‘Circling’, can be seen at the Institute until Saturday, May 12.
