The Chris “Pa” Wall Memorial Game was one-sided as the Royals romped to a 16.14 (110) to 4.12 (36) win at St Arnaud.
It was a big day for St Arnaud, which hosted reunions for past premiership teams from 1948, 1958, 1978, 1988 and 1998, but it was a lacklustre performance from the current-day Saints, who had just one goal on the board up until three quarter-time.
Darcy Harrison, Davin Ferreira (four goals) and Rian McGough played well for the Royals, who squared their ledger at 2-2.
Coach James McNamee, who has been dominating across half-back, was again the best player for the Saints, who weren’t helped by Kurt Torney suffering a serious leg injury early in the game.
• For the first time since its premiership season of 2014, Wedderburn has won two games in a row.
The Redbacks followed up last week’s victory over Sea Lake Nandaly with a 29-point win over Boort.
The Redbacks won 16.14 (110) to 13.3 (81) at home, kicking their first score of more than 100 in their past 42 games and doing so without injured key forward Sam Barnes (hamstring).
Coach Danny Benaim showed his class for the Redbacks with a bag of seven goals – three in the first half and four in the second – to be his side’s best player.
Down the other end the in-form Rohan Nolan was again a strong target for the Magpies, slotting six of their 13 goals.
Nolan has now kicked 20 of the Magpies’ 38 goals in their past three games, which have all been losses.
• Wycheproof-Narraport’s winning start to its premiership defence continued with a 33-point victory over Charlton.
With the dynamic Corey Jones booting six goals, the Demons eased past the Navies 12.9 (81) to 7.6 (48) at home.
Scores had been level 2.1 apiece at quarter-time, before the Demons opened up a 27-point advantage at the main break.
As well as Jones, also playing top games for the Demons were Dane McLennan and Daniel Bibby.
Thomas Finlay and Trent Cossar were best for the Navies, who are 0-4 and remain on the bottom of the ladder.
• The ladder-leading Birchip-Watchem is still undefeated and Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers winless after the Bulls’ 51-point victory at home.
Aided by a seven-goal haul from key forward Stephen Paulke, the Bulls were 13.10 (88) to 5.7 (37) victors against the struggling Tigers.
