Again highlighting the unpredictability in the competition this year, the Blues upset the reigning premiers 14.14 (98) to 14.9 (93) at home to rid the Demons’ monkey from their back.
The previous time Inglewood had beaten Calivil United was in round 15, 2002, when the Blues won 14.12 (96) to 9.8 (62) under co-coaches Stewart Egan and Charlie Smythe.
The next 31 match-ups were all wins to Calivil United by an average of 72 points before Saturday’s nail-biting Blues’ victory.
However, not only was the win the Blues’ first in 16 years over the Demons, they achieved it on the back of a 155-point thrashing from Bridgewater last week.
“It was a great response by our boys. With a lot of new faces we’ve got at our club last week is one that we quickly put to bed because that’s not what we’re about,” Inglewood coach Ryan McNish said.
“The way we went out in the first quarter today was exactly the way we wanted to play our footy and I’m really proud of all the boys and their efforts.”
The Blues were headed late by the Demons before Liam Drummond kicked what proved to be the match-winning goal.
The Blues’ win over the Demons formed part of another entertaining round in the Loddon Valley league where there were margins of five, nine, 18 and 23 points across the four games.
